The downward train should have begun in 2005 my friend, but Richt managed to keep Shockley around. Success runs in cycles. Whiners annoy me. If Richt and the team were so petulant, they would be winless.

Richpooch- "Keep drinking the Kool Aid my friend! The downward train began in 2005 and it appears it is gaining speed."

We win the SEC Championship and that's the beginning of a downward spiral? That's one of the stupidest comments I've ever heard.

Excellent comments.Have known of Nesmith's depth of involvement in UGA for a long time.My overwhelming reaction to his letter was:WHY? What in the world did he think the letter would accomplish? He has to know that nothing positive could come from it.Only negatives.WHY?

Richt has won 65 games at Georgia. Only four coaches in the nation have won more in the same amount of time. Dooley and Russell won 48 in their first seven years. 'Nuff said.

Mr. Nesmith's commentary seemed just what you described, a self righteous attempt to undermine Richt and what he has accomplished so far.

Although nothing will ever satisfy the masses 100%, even winning the MNC, Coach Richt great job of winning and representing the school. I'm sorry that some "fans" and alumni can't whole heartedly agree.

"If he really desired a heart-to-heart conversation with Mark Richt or even Damon Evans, I doubt he would be turned away."

This just a few paragraphs after admonishing NeSmith for making assumptions.

"A petulant demand that “it’s past time for the investments to pay off” not two years after Georgia’s second SEC title under Richt is plain insulting."

I see romanticizing the past has indeed been a popular coping technique this week.

It is well and good to defend the current staff for accolades up to 2005, for they deserve defending.

However while "dollars, top recruiting classes, and world-class facilities are" not *unique* to Georgia, we are on a level for those three combined that few others obtain. (The team that just WHIPPED Georgia, for example? They'll never have near the base of talent that Georgia gets to cherry pick from in recruiting....)

So recognizing that simple fact above, it is hard to argue that since late 2005 2 Wins and 7 Losses in your own division is in any way "competitive." Those are just facts.

Therefore I think performance-based strategies like advocated in the column you are criticizing, as a means of incentive for (possibly) underachieving leaders, is responsible to shareholders. It is at least a concept that shouldn't be feared.

And I'm willing to bet that Richt's staff -- unlike blind emotional defenders rushing to their rescue -- are quite willing to see merit in performance-based strategies, for they are the type of people who have confidence in their program's ability over the long run. At least, we better hope they do.

As to the hand-wringing over "rumors of eroding support" affecting recruiting, let's not be naive. There is no more appearance of "eroding support" at UGA than *any* other football school. They all have them, in other words....

So in summary, if "we all have the right to voice our opinion" then I would only offer that Mr. NeSmith's were no more unwarranted than blind-faith-defense-at-all-cost pleas, and much more creative.

Good reply to a putrid article. The SEC is too deep for one team to dominate all the time. The dawgs do have some issues to fix -- particularly on defense. The young O-line will get better as they grow up and will be stout after this year. When they get better the offense will get better.

BTW -- Dooley only had one losing season (1977).

Damn well said. Pretty tacky way for a board member to address his (or his butt buddies')conceerns. I was a freshman in 1966. I've been a DAWG every day since that time. Sometimes it wasn't pretty, but I knew that things wouldn't stay that way for ever. Richt is the best chance we have to a solid and sustained program if the experts will just shut up and provide support. Thanks for the opportunity to add my two cents. I just can't bring myself to post on the whining and pissing boards.
